Interview with Bogdan DOGARU, Director of Safety and RAM Engineering Thales Canada, Transportation Systems.

Thales Canada contracted SERMA Safety and Security to support the Thales Canada, Transportation Systems division in performing activities meant to ensure the safety of the SelTrac solution.

SelTrac is a digital railway signaling technology used to automatically control the movement of subway and light rail trains, a CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) system. It allows operators to manage dynamically the number of vehicles according to traffic needs, to increase efficiency, reduce costs and guarantee safety.

The Thales Canada’s Transportation Systems division, responsible for developing the SelTrac CBTC solution, ensures that it meets European and international regulatory and legislative requirements (CENELEC EN 50126, 50128, 50129, 50159…).

Expert in safety, SERMA Safety and Security, has been contracted by Thales Canada to support on European standard EN 50128 required activities for safety critical software. SERMA Safety and Security verifies that the methodologies implemented are in line with the standard by performing Software level safety analyses.

“We are very satisfied with the service provided by SERMA Safety and Security, which, thanks to its professionalism, rigour and capacity of analysis, is able to adapt to our and our many stakeholders’ expectationts, at different levels”, highlights Bogdan DOGARU.

This cooperation is expected to continue over time, as Thales Canada continues to develop and deploy CBTC systems worldwide within the next years. Today, there are already more than fifty systems deployed, in London, Hong Kong, New York and other cities around the world.
