Sucess story: Functional Safety Mission. Aqualyo Secures Its Innovation to Enhance Rainwater Use with SERMA Safety and Security

A French company based in Gironde, Aqualyo develops innovative solutions to collect, store, and reuse rainwater in order to reduce the use of drinking water for non-essential purposes such as toilets, washing machines, or outdoor irrigation.

Faced with increasing water scarcity and rising costs, Aqualyo designs water-efficient systems that combine large-capacity storage, embedded intelligence, and connected control. The objective is clear: enable both individuals and professionals to use rainwater in a simple, reliable, and sustainable way.

Unlike traditional rainwater harvesting systems, Aqualyo’s solution integrates seamlessly into outdoor environments while offering high storage capacity and intelligent water usage management.

Challenge: ensuring the safety and reliability of a connected system

As part of the development of its connected plumbing panel, Aqualyo wanted to ensure that its system complies with the requirements of the industrial safety standard IEC 61508.

The objective was twofold:
• ensure the functional safety of the product,
• and provide a strong guarantee of reliability to its customers.

In the field of water management, equipment reliability is essential, as these systems are directly linked to daily uses and a vital resource.

Why SERMA Safety and Security?

Aqualyo was already familiar with the expertise of SERMA Safety and Security, particularly due to its regional presence in Bordeaux and its strong reputation in functional safety.

“We chose SERMA Safety and Security for their expertise and their ability to listen. Their proposal was the one that best matched our expectations and the specific features of our product,” explains Mr. Lavaur, co-founder of Aqualyo.

A structured support approach

SERMA Safety and Security’s experts supported Aqualyo in analyzing its system and structuring its compliance approach with the IEC 61508 standard.

This work helped identify key areas to secure and define priority improvement actions. It also contributed to evolving certain internal practices, particularly within the engineering department, by more strongly integrating functional safety requirements into product development.

“SERMA Safety and Security teams adopted a very educational approach tailored to our solution. Their rigor and intellectual honesty were particularly appreciated. Their support helped us improve our product while strengthening our customers’ trust,” adds Mr. Lavaur.

Thanks to this support, Aqualyo was able to structure its compliance approach and enhance the reliability of its connected solution. A key asset to support the company’s growth and promote the adoption of innovative solutions for more sustainable water management.
